Step 3: Work with an Outside Authority

  • Share your story.
    • Contact local elected officials such as a city council or a state legislator.
    • To find your list of your legislators, click here.
  • Research your legal rights.
    • Read about some of your rights on the Renters Rights page. Keep in mind there is no right to smoke.
    • For assistance regarding further rights as a tenant, contact Vermont Tenants, which provides free direct services to tenants including advice advocacy and referrals and we also conduct workshops for various groups on residential rental housing laws, codes and more.
    • Search for an attorney at Vermont Legal Aid, an online source of legal aid information for low-income Vermont residents.
